"Uh, not you as well," I muttered, as I read the ingredients listed on the back of a £3.50 jar of Sacla’ basil pesto. As well as basil, pine nuts, extra virgin olive oil and hard cheese, my staple pasta sauce also contained glucose, flavouring, lactic acid and — unexpectedly — potato.
I couldn't buy it because I was on a mission: to substitute every item of ultra-processed food I would usually buy for my family of four for a healthier alternative, without bankrupting said family or having to spend hours making my own sourdough starter.
